History

Victor, has a style all its own. Officially incorporated in 1893, it has been known as The City of Mines.

The mines around the city supplied much of the 21 million ounces of gold that came from the district in the past century. The streets of Victor were literally paved with gold and the town was dotted with active gold miVictornes.

Victor, Colorado

In 1899, a fire destroyed the town, but residents rebuilt their town in brick and today's architecture is that of the post-fire construction.

Today Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co. (a subsidiary of AngloGold) is operating the largest open pit and heap leach mine in the state. Gold has again become a focus of Victor's economy.

Today's businesses include an old-fashioned soda fountain, art gallery, Cajun restaurant, antique stores, gift shops and a restored four-story hotel. The town's streets are lined with turn-of-the-century buildings and original miner's homes dot the city's hillsides.

A driving tour of the historic mines is available from Victor businesses. Please drive slowly on the narrow, winding roads and stay on public roads. Old mine areas can be extremely dangerous and all are on private property.

Climate of Victor

The weather often has locals wondering if their perch alongside Battle Mountain is heaven at their backdoor. The sun shines in Victor an average of 300 days per year. Often Victorites sit high and dry, though somewhat cooler, while the surrounding area is clouded over with rain or snow. Our annual average precipitation is 19 inches and our scant 18 average annual inches of snowfall make winter seem like a breeze.

While the plains are sweltering in summertime 100-degree heat, Victor is cool and comfortable. Locals complain the few days each summer when thermometers climb near 90 degrees. In the winter, Victor has some nights of subzero weather - but once the sun rises, daytime temps warm up quickly. January has its up and downs, but occasionally 50-degree weather warms up the winter spirits. Most of the area's snow is received between February and April.

Location

Victor is situated on the rim of the caldera of a former volcano. The caldera is rich with gold ore, which is being mined by the Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company, employer some 300 workers.

The city is filled with historic gold rush days buildings, mine structures and homes. The topography is hilly and the base soil is rocky and shallow, often over solid rock.

Wildlife like the Victor area too - bear, deer, elk and small game roam the hillsides and ravines. Nearby Skagway Reservoir offers fishing opportunties.

Victor is easily accessed from Colorado Springs, a 53-mile drive via paved state highways. It is also accessible via the scenic Gold Belt Tour, a national Scenic Backcountry Byway that connects Victor to Cripple Creek, Florissant, Canon City and Florence.
