Royal Gorge Bridge & Park Celebrates 80th Birthday and the Fourth of July
The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, Canon City, Colo., celebrates its 80th birthday and the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
The world’s highest suspension bridge was under construction in July, 1929, with the first towers constructed over a 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River. Special music and entertainment is scheduled for a memorable Colorado three-day weekend, July 3-5.
The Nature & Raptor Center of Pueblo, will introduce guests to America’s Birds of Prey with live demonstrations at the park. Face Painting by Denise Lallemand, and special music by the Geezers is on tap for the celebration 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. each day.
Several shows daily will feature the Tom Munch Historical and Music Show, providing fun-filled history of the area.
The Mountain Man Trading Post, the park’s newest addition, will feature The Royal Gorge 21 black powder gun salute to honor America’s pioneers. The Trading Post also features the Traveling Medicine Man Show, a western blues band, and cowboys on Longhorn Steers sauntering up and down the old time front street. Visitors can learn Colorado history from Spotted Hawk at the Native American camp.
The park will have extended hours for the three-day event, July 3-5, 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Admission to the park includes several attractions including the World’s Steepest Incline Railway, and the World’s Longest Single-Span Aerial Tram. The Royal Rush Skycoaster, the World’s Scariest Skycoaster, sitting on the edge of the Royal Gorge is a thrill ride daring guests to “swing out” over the Royal Gorge. This attraction is an extra pay feature. The park has also introduced horseback riding with a half hour trail ride called “Ride the Rim” starting at $25 per rider.
