Manitou Springs Street Party Kicks Off Summer Season
A 50s street party, sidewalk sales, Salute to America and pancake breakfast make Manitou the place to be on May 30.
On Saturday, May 30, Manitou Springs will turn back time with A Salute to America---a day packed full of good clean family fun, sidewalk shopping bargains and retro-themed entertainment. Manitou is a popular summertime destination and this event will kick off the season in style. Come early and stay all day to enjoy a full slate of activities that are all free to the public.
The Salute to America begins at 9 a.m. with a pancake breakfast in front of Olde Tyme Photography (903 Manitou Avenue) courtesy of the Manitou Springs Volunteer Fire Department. A 50s-era sidewalk party then begins between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. with Fort Carson’s a capella band, Harmony in Motion. After their performance, more golden oldies will be on rotation, so bring your Saddle Oxfords and poodle skirt and rock around the clock! Vintage classic cars will be on display throughout the town, courtesy of the Manitou Springs American Legion post. Manitou Avenue will be alive with old-fashioned sidewalk sales, street performers and buskers.
“We wanted an event that was reflective of the incredible sense of community that is alive in Manitou and one that harkened back to a more old-fashioned era,” said Kitty Clemens, Director of the Manitou Springs Economic Development Council. “The streets of Manitou will be colorfully accented with the new art banners designed by Manitou Springs schoolchildren and the newest phase of streetscaping will be complete.” Also on display will be a flag on display in front of Manitou stores---one for each state. When you present your ID from that state, you will receive a discount at that store.
Manitou Springs has its roots as a health resort and an artists’ colony and boasts a diverse population; support for the culinary, holistic, visual, literary and performing arts; and a colorful history. Manitou was recently lauded as one of the coolest small towns in the country by Budget Travel magazine.
It is the purpose of the Central Manitou Springs Business Improvement District to be a strong collaboration of business, government and community. Merchants in the district work together to insure a long-term goal of a clean, safe, vibrant visitor destination area reflective of its historic heritage that is attractive and welcoming to both visitors and residents, and contributes to the economic prosperity of Manitou Springs.
