Pikes Peak Country Attractions Association Presents
2008 Annual Tourism Achievement Award
For Immediate Release
Manitou Springs, CO----October 13, 2008-- Pikes Peak Country Attractions (PPCAA) held its Annual Business Meeting on October 8, 2008 at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, where The Western Museum of Mining and Industry was presented with Pikes Peak Country Attractions Association’s special Tourism Achievement Award for their contributions to the tourism industry in 2008.
Michele Carvell, Executive Director for Pikes Peak Country Attractions Association, acknowledged the Museum’s dedication to the tourism industry in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region. Jo Behrens, PPCAA’s President of the Board of Directors, made the following comments to the attendees at the luncheon:
“This has been the year of staying alive, of making something out of what we’ve got, and being sure our voices are heard, no matter how loud the chatter around us gets. The member who is receiving this year’s Tourism Achievement Award has shown unstoppable determination, fight and passion to keep on keeping on. Throughout the years, they bring forth new creative events, regularly send us press releases and information for our visitors to read, and knows how to just made the best out of everything they have. They’ve weathered some hard years, like many of us have, but their tenacity never seems to tarnish. Their passion for the history of Colorado Springs and those who made their mark here is irresistible. The zeal they show when teaching history and inventions to kids of all ages is infectious, and at times, magical. They are a “hands on” attraction in every way, for their personal touch is what makes the memory of visiting them a lasting one. The Western Museum of Mining and Industry shows us how the past can teach us the right way toward the future, and for that, they are this year’s recipient of Pikes Peak Country’s Tourism Achievement Award.”
Loretta Howden graciously accepted the Pikes Peak Country Attractions Tourism Achievement Award on behalf of the Western Museum of Mining & Industry. Founded in 1970 by a group of individuals interested in preserving the rich legacy of mining in the American West, the museum tells the industry’s story through guided award winning tours where visitors witness operating steam engines, learn how to pan for gold, venture through a recreated mine drift, experiment with hands-on exhibits, and more.
Pikes Peak Country Attractions Association represents 30 natural and man-made attractions in El Paso, Fremont and Teller Counties. In partnership with the Colorado Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau, PPCAA annually publishes the Official Visitor Guide to Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region, the most widely distributed tourism publication in the State of Colorado which is supported through an international, national and regional advertising campaign and is the primary fulfillment piece to inquiries into the Pikes Peak region.
