Pro-Am Adult and Kid’s Dessert Bake-Off Slated for
Manitou Springs Midweek Farmers Market
Do your Double Chocolate Madness chocolate chip cookies induce an overwhelming urge to overindulge? Is your Tipsy Squire Trifle a transcendent experience? Could your Patriotic Apple Pie be the key to world peace? Then put your non-stick silicone bakeware and your baking mojo to the test and enter the Pro-Am Dessert Bake Off at the Manitou Springs Midweek Farmer’s Market on July 16.
The competition is open to everyone and consists of two segments: Adult and Kid’s. Within the Adult category, there are two ways to enter: Commercial Kitchen or Home-Based Baker. Prizes include a $250 grand prize from Otho’s Gourmet Cookes and Brownies in the amateur category and a $250 grand prize from the Whickerbill for the commercial kitchen category. In the kid’s competition, each child will receive a prize for competing; grand prizes in each category include a $25 gift certificate from RetroMoto Toys in Manitou.
The Kids’ competition is broken up into age groups: 5-8 years (these entrants will be expected to have both adult supervision and help with instructions); 9-12 years (adult supervision and help with the oven only); and 13-17 (adult supervision, help with the oven only if needed and using only ingredients from scratch).
Entries will be judged on taste, appearance and creativity. After the judging and announcement of grand prize winners, each entry will be portioned and sold, and consumers will be able to see the baker’s name and/or the name of the commercial establishment. All money raised will benefit the Manitou Springs Midweek Market, which runs every Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. through August 27. There is no need to pre-register; just deliver the dish from 3-4:30 p.m. A refrigerator will be provided for cold desserts. Judging begins at 5 p.m.
It is the purpose of the Central Manitou Springs Business Improvement District to be a strong collaboration of business, government and community. Merchants in the district work together to insure a long-term goal of a clean, safe, vibrant visitor destination area reflective of its historic heritage that is attractive and welcoming to both visitors and residents, and contributes to the economic prosperity of Manitou Springs.
